To complete your Texas barber continuing education (CE) requirements, you must adhere to the guidelines established by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). For licensed barbers in Texas, continuing education is necessary to renew your license and maintain professional standing.
Required Texas Barber Continuing Education Coursework
Determine if you need the 2 hour or 4 hour course based on how long you have had your license in Texas.
As of September 1, 2025, barbers are required to complete a total of 4 hours of continuing education every 2 year renewal period. Barbers who have held their license for over 15 years of experience are only required to complete a total of 2 years of continuing education every 2 year renewal period. This coursework ensures that professionals stay updated on relevant state laws, health and safety standards, and professional practices. Completion of sanitation and human trafficking coursework is required for all license holders, irrespective of experience or time in the profession.
You may not receive continuing education hours for attending the same course more than once. One hour of continuing education is equivalent to 50 minutes of actual instruction time.
Required Coursework If You Have Held Your License for up to 15 years:
- One hour in sanitation
- One hour in human trafficking awareness
- Two hours of your choice in any of the following topics:
- Any topic listed in Section 83.202 of the rules
- Sanitation required under the law and rules
- The Texas Barbering and Cosmetology law and rules
- Mental health awareness
Required Coursework If You Have Held Your License for over 15 years:
You are required to complete both of the following:
- One hour of department-approved continuing education in sanitation
- One hour of department-approved continuing education in human trafficking awareness
The additional two hours of continuing education will be waived and will not be required.
For Individuals with Multiple Licenses If you hold more than one license within the barbering and cosmetology operator professions (such as barber and manicurist or esthetician), any continuing education completed for one license will also count toward fulfilling the requirements for your other license(s). Our 2 hour and 4-hour course options are designed to meet the core CE requirements for all types of individual barber training and cosmetology credentials.
